Phosphorescence versus Fluorescence - Teacher Resources for Homeschooling

Phosphorescence versus Fluorescence - Teacher Resources for Homeschooling

our Teacher Resources - inspired by  Charlotte Mason Homeschooling with a Living Books Curriculum

Difference Fluorescence and Phosphorescence

  • Fluorescence is light energy produced by a process where high-energy radiation (such as ultraviolet or X-ray) is absorbed by electrons surrounding an atom and is re-emitted as light energy.
examples of fluorescence - clothing for clubs, fluorescent rocks, gemstones, crystals

What is Fluorescence?

Some materials absorb invisible, high-energy "black" (ultraviolet) light, use part of the energy, then emit nanoseconds later bright visible light, but only while the ultraviolet light shines on it
  • Phosphoresence is light energy produced by a particular type of chemical reaction where the excess chemical energy of the reactants is given off as light energy. acc to wikipedia
examples of phosphorescence in daily life - " Glow in the Dark toys

What is Phosphorescence?

  • Phosphorescence is similar to fluorescence. Both involve absorption of energy. "Glow-in-the-dark" light (phosphorescence) is not as bright as fluorescence but lasts much longer.  acc to ehow

( 20000 Leagues under the Sea - Jules Verne - Chapter Teacher Resources for Homeschooling )

Quote Jules Verne

" For some time prior to the opening of our story ships at sea had been met by an enourmous object, a long thing shaped like a spindle and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movement than a whale. At times it was phosphorescent. .. "
